Job Opening: Construction Health and Safety Specialist

CDA has an excellent opportunity for the qualified candidate; we have an open Construction Health and Safety Specialist position supporting our ongoing construction management work at a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical manufacturing site.

The Health and Safety Specialist position is part of the EHS Department and will report to the Director of Health and Safety; the position will include work in the field at active construction sites and at regional client sites. The Health and Safety Specialist will work directly with Project Specialists and Superintendents in support of a proactive and robust contractor safety effort at pharmaceutical and life sciences facilities.

Position Responsibilities Include: 

  • Review, tracking, approval and administration of Job Safety Analyses and other pre-task safety
    plans.
  • Administration of CDA and client specific hazardous work permit processes and logs.
  • Administration of CDA Contractor Safety orientation process.
  • Review and approval of Daily Safe Plans of Action (SPA).
  • Collection and maintenance of contractor safety training documentation.
  • Completion of construction site safety and health audits.
  • Research and interpretation of applicable safety related standards, guidelines and client
    procedures.
  • Working with contractors and project teams to maintain a best-in-class level of site safety
    performance.
  • Collection, management and reporting of leading and lagging safety metrics.
  • Maintenance of project specific JSA and safety look-ahead logs.
  • Attending weekly project review and coordination meetings.
  • Review safety programs developed by the Contractor and, if necessary, provide
    recommendations for improvement.
  • Availability to work weekends.
  • Physical capacity to stand/ walk most of the day, climb ladders and scaffolds, enter/ exit site work
    and excavation areas, carry up to 35LBS.

Required Competencies:

  • Self-motivated with ability to research and communicate applicable construction safety strategies
    to business partners and project teams.
  • Ability to communicate with, and present to, all levels of organization/ project.
  • Ability to actively coach tradespeople and ‘sell’ the construction safety and health effort.
  • Ability to multi-task and be comfortable with involvement in multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to deliver clear, concise verbal or written communications to a varied audience.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of construction means and methods; knowledge of
    pharmaceutical processes and systems is desirable.

Required Education and Training:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent field preferred;
    relevant field experience and training in lieu of degree will also be considered.
  • Third party safety certification (CHST, COSS, CSP) preferred.
  • OSHA 510, Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry.
  • 30-Hour Construction Safety Outreach Training.

Experience and Understanding:

  • 6-8 years of professional construction safety experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction means/ methods.

Required Skills and Capacities:

  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI and NFPA requirements and documentation.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to stand and walk at least 6 hours/ day, climb ladders, climb scaffolds, lift 35LBS.
